Sultan is a middle aged wrestling champion (Salman Khan) tries to make a comeback to represent India at the Olympics. It is a romantic sports-drama film directed by Ali Abbas Zafar. Produced by Aditya Chopra under Yash Raj Films banner, the film stars Salman Khan and Anushka Sharma and centers around Sultan Ali Khan (Salman Khan), a wrestler who has problems in his professional and personal life. From a small town wrestler in Haryana, Sultan achieves global fame winning bouts at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, the 2011 FILA Wrestling World Championships in Istanbul and the 2012 London Olympics. The film released on July 6, 2016.
Salman Khan has done it again. A new movie and a new box office record has been created. “Sultan,” starring Salman and Anushka Sharma, was released on a partial holiday on Wednesday and still it managed to rake in more than Rs. 36.54 crore on its opening day at the domestic box office.
Though it couldn’t become the biggest opener ever after it collected Rs 36.54 crore on day 1 (Happy New Year still holds the record with an opening day collection of Rs 44.97 crore). But it did take the second spot in the list. It broke quite a few records on day one itself. It earned another Rs 37.30 crore on day 2 and broke a few more records. So we started wondering if Sultan could overtake the 3-day collections of either Bajrangi Bhaijaan or Happy New Year. Our trade experts were hopeful that it would, but as we got the third day figures a few minutes back, everything was clear.
Sultan broke another record as it crossed the opening day collections of Bajrangi Bhaijaan (Rs 102.60 crore) and thus becoming Salman Khan’s Biggest opener ever. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh confirmed this as he tweeted, “And #Sultan hits a CENTURY… Also crosses *first 3 days* biz of #BajrangiBhaijaan, which is Salman’s BIGGEST OPENER… INCREDIBLE! #Sultan Wed 36.54 cr, Thu 37.30 cr, Fri 31.50 cr. Total: Rs 105.34 cr. India biz… Will continue its WINNING STREAK on Sat + Sun. Salman Khan’s BIGGEST OPENERS… #Sultan 105.34 cr [Wed+Thu+Fri], #BajrangiBhaijaan 102.60 cr [Fri+Sat+Sun], #PRDP 101.47 cr [Thu+Fri+Sat].”
As reported earlier, “Sultan” has emerged as the biggest opener of 2016 and also the biggest Eid grosser of all time, shattering the records of Shah Rukh Khan’s “Chennai Express,” Salman’s “Kick,” “Ek Tha Tiger” and “Bajrangi Bhaijaan.” The opening day collection of “Sultan” is Rs. 36.54 crore, which is the third highest of all time.
However, it failed to beat Shah Rukh Khan’s 3 day collection record for Happy New Year (Rs 108.80 crore). Our trade experts had suggested that the film had a vague chance of breaking this record, but with a dip on Friday, Sultan couldn’t beat it.
Meanwhile, there is no need to worry. Salman’s Eid release is on its way to become the Highest weekend grosser as it continues to maintain a very good occupancy.
