Following his titanic struggle against General Zod, Metropolis has been razed to the ground and Superman is the most controversial figure in the world. While for many he is still an emblem of hope, a growing number of people consider him a threat to humanity, seeking justice for the chaos he has brought to Earth. As far as Bruce Wayne is concerned, Superman is clearly a danger to society. He fears for the future of the world with such a reckless power left ungoverned, and so he dons his mask and cape to right Superman’s wrongs.

The rivalry between them is furious, fueled by bitterness and vengeance, and nothing can dissuade them from waging this war. However, a dark new threat arises in the form of a third man: one who has a power greater than either of them to endanger the world and cause total destruction!

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Film Review

Some said it to be a total mess while some others opined that the film is a total washout with one of the prominent review thrashing the movie to the dustbin giving zero stars out of five. All these early viewpoints in fact helped me to reduce the expectation level of Zack Snyder’s much hyped movie of war between two legendary superheroes to the very minimum.

With the baggage of expectations not with me, Batman vs Superman : Dawn of Justice proved to be an average and passable one for me that kept me engaged without much boredom.

The fact that it was publicised to be a battle of epic proportion is one of the primary reason for pulling the film down to a certain level. A golden chance to come up with something big is literally wasted here by Snyder. The conflict between Batman and Superman was the biggest USP of the film but when it came to the plot, it didn’t had a strong and convincing reason for the fight and film could not exploit nor capitalise on the battle to take the film to another level.

But one should also be aware that there are enough scenes and moments to cherish for fans of both the superheroes. That helps the movie to attain the pass mark. But for a film projected on the lines of something big is coming, would just the pass mark be sufficient? The answer is a big no. The film is very much dark and intense but we feel something is missing once it all ends.

The story basically focus on the plan that Batman hatch to end Superman’s rein of a one man superpower that lead to a showdown between the two. But that battle as I said gets a raw treatment and once Doomsday arrives, the situation forces the two to unite to save mankind from total destruction. From thereon its the usual stuff we see in any of the Hollywood films of this genre with nothing fresh.

Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/ Batman was able to make an impression of himself though not in a big way like the way Christian Bale did. May be the half baked writing for the character he was portraying took its toll on the performance. Henry Cavill as Superman was passable. He had the physical apperance and looks to make the role look nice on screen and on that aspect, the actor was successful.

Jesse Eisenberg was very much appealing, impressive and brilliant as Lex Luthor. His dialogue delivery and expressions gave a new meaning to the negative character he was portraying. Gadot as Wonder Women did not had a meaty stuff to play and it was more or less a cameo from her. But still it was a memorable cameo. Rest of the supporting actors were okay.

Lot of work has been done on the visual effects and the quality is there to be seen in all the explosion scenes. All the electric effects spilling the City once Doomsday arrives also had quality at its peak. Good Cinematography and some excellent background score with lot of energy too are also some highlights of the film.

Overall, for me this movie is not a total whitewash as has been projected in the initial reports that are coming in. Of course, it has its drawbacks and the film is nowhere near its hype. But still I found Batman vs Superman as a one time watchable film with the very little of expectation.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Critics Review

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice picks up where Man of Steel left off- with Superman (Henry Cavill) and Zod (Michael Shannon) battling it out over Metropolis. But it doesn’t show this battle as just a fight between two superhumans (or rather aliens- which is what the film reminds us Superman is). It shows the repercussions this fight has for ordinary human beings, like those working for Wayne Financial. While the two Kryptonians battle it out in the sky, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) bleeds for the people in his company, dead because their building was destroyed in the fight. As Bruce rescues a little girl whose mother was in a burning building, the human impact of these epic battles comes home. This is one of many ‘real’ moments in the film, that make you feel something other than adrenaline rushing through your veins.

The film does not spend too much time establishing the reason for the eponymous Batman v Superman rivalry. Batman aka Bruce Wayne obviously feels that Superman is going about playing ‘hero’ without considering the consequences (like the orphaned little girl). Superman aka Clark Kent wonders ‘Who is Batman to take justice into his own hands?’ The justification for their rivalry is obviously not rock-solid, but the fight sequences that follow make up for it.

Action is the film’s real strength, and in this department, Zack Snyder has pulled out all stops. Every time Batman and Superman come up against each other, there is palpable tension, not just on screen but in the audience as well. Will the best of human technology be able to beat brute alien strength? Will the Bat of Gotham triumph against the Son of Krypton? You really should see for yourself!

The story is not airtight, nor the screenplay gripping- something we had gotten used to with Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight films. But then to call Nolan’s films ‘superhero’ films would be to do them and him a grave injustice.

This, however, is a superhero film and delivers everything you expect from one. The heroes are muscular and almost invincible, the special effects are larger-than-life, and the action will keep your blood pumping till the very last minute. There are no performances here that will suck you into the universe, but the potent mix of drama, action and reality is heady enough to make it worth a watch.

For thrilling fight scenes that will keep your adrenaline tap on. For the moments of reality in a ‘super’ universe. For Jesse Eisenberg’s convincing performance as a man (Lex Luthor) at the precipice of madness. To witness the Dawn of Justice and a new spate of extravagant, action-driven movies.
