FIR Filed Against Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya: An FIR was lodged against playback singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya on charges of public obscenity and outrage of modesty on Thursday after Aam Aadmi Party leader Preeti Sharma Menon filed a complaint at the Cyber Cell. The singer has been booked under Sections 500 and 509 of the Indian Penal Code and the Section 67 of the Information Technology Act.

Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) member Preeti Sharma Menon on Thursday registered an FIR against singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya over a comment he made about her on Twitter earlier this month. Officials said an FIR of defamation and outraging a woman’s modesty had been registered against Mr. Bhattacharya after Ms. Sharma Menon submitted her complaint at the Cyber police station.

The singer had recently sparked controversy by tweeting that the murder of an Infosys techie in Chennai was the result of “love jihad”. However, when a Delhi-based journalist objected to his tweet, the singer had allegedly replied with abusive comments.

Now he Tweeted “बेशर्म बुढ़िया..U not proud of Indians? Wats your breed? U sk pakis..I fk Pakis, U lick..I kick, dnt block just wait.”

Delhi Police registered a complaint against playback singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya on Sunday evening for his “abusive” comments on Twitter allegedly targeting a woman journalist. Ms. Sharma Menon complaint to the police, Ms. Menon said she had reacted to Mr. Bhattacharya’s tweets about journalist Swati Chaturvedi, referring to him as ‘scum’. This had been objected to by a Twitter user with the handle @TommSingh. In a subsequent tweet, she claimed, Mr. Bhattacharya allegedly asked @TommSingh to “respect her even if she if ugly or pichhli”.

Ms. Sharma Menon has submitted a printout of the tweets with her complaint. She said, “Abhijit had abused me when I had brought his indecent tweets to the notice of the Mumbai police commissioner’s Twitter handle. When celebrities like him abuse women and use indecent language and spread communal hatred, it sets a terrible example. It is important that action is taking against him to teach a lesson that obscene trolling will not go unpunished.”
