John Gruden resigns from Raiders… what will happen to his contract now?

Division: 9

John Gruden resigned as coach of the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday night. His resignation came after a series of emails sent by him between 2011 and 2018 became public. In those emails, Gruden used racist, homophobic, and anti-feminist language in describing NFL Players Association executive director Demoris Smith, among others. Raiders confirmed his resignation via twitter.

Gruden rejoined the Raiders in 2018, previously coaching the team from 1998 to 2001. He was brought in to bring the team back to relevance and help the team move to Las Vegas, led by a rising star in Derek Carr.

Raiders removed Gruden from there monday night football On ESPN, he was offered a huge contract to coach the team. In fact, Gruden received the biggest contract in NFL history: a ten-year, $100 million deal.

So, what happens now that Gruden is no longer a Raiders coach, less than four years into that ten-year deal?

Athletics Tashan Reid originally stated Gruden would forfeit the remaining $60 million remaining on his contract. However, USA Today reported The team and the former coach are working on a package and the situation was “unresolved”.

It seems unlikely that Gruden would receive at least a little bit of funding as a result of resigning, but it certainly wouldn’t be the $60 million he stood to gain had he terminated the entire contract.

In terms of annual salary, Gruden was the third highest paid coach in the NFL. Only New England’s Bill Belichick ($12.5 million) and Seattle’s Pete Carroll ($11 million) will earn more this year.

Although it is now largely irrelevant, Gruden’s deal also included a no-trade clause. During his first round with the Raiders, the team traded him to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2001. Gruden signed a five-year, $17.5 million deal with the Books, and the Raiders received $8 million in cash, two first-round picks. , and in turn two second-round picks. The following season, the Buccaneers defeated the Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII.

This time around, Gruden is leaving the Raiders in even more tumultuous situations. And on the other hand no other coaching job is waiting for him.
