Paayum Puli is all about an undercover operation and its aftermath. Some leading businessmen in Madurai are killed one by one by a gang creating panic among the business community. After succeeding in instilling fear in the businessmen’s minds, the gang and collects Rs.2 crores as ‘protection money’ from each of these beleaguered businessmen.
One businessman, however, chooses to go to police and the police operation effectively busts the gang’s efforts. A gangster is killed in the operation but the gang kills a police officer in broad daylight in front of large number of people.
Cops make a plan to launch an undercover operation to get rid of this menace and deploy an officer (Vishal) from Tiruchi. Vishal goes about his duty and guns down almost all the gangsters. His job, though, is far from over; as the big man of the gang told him before death, there is yet another man above all these gangsters. Who is he?
We aren’t revealing the suspense element and conclude our narration at this very moment! Watch the movie to know who the man is, what kind of challenges he poses for the cops how is Vishal’s approach to get rid of him.
Director Suseenthiran, known for making action-packed flicks laced with family sentiments, has done it again. The way he portrays Vishal’s family gives just the right backdrop to the movie. Vishal’s love affair with Kajal Aggarwal adds colour to the fare. Vishal’s operation against the gangsters in the first-half and his investigation-cum-hunting of the kingpin in the second-half have the potential to provide a thrilling experience. The twists in the tale are quite interesting. The sentiments have been handled well.
The big problem with the movie is that despite many twists, the movie is highly predictable. The investigation part too hasn’t been dealth with propertly. It’s more of gunfire that brain power. The sentimental dimension does get an important place in the investigation but the depiction doesn’t make the viewers relate to it.
Some scenes stand out. The way the undercover operation is revealed and the moment we know who the real villain is are quite interesting. Yet the way the story has been taken forward leaves a lot to be desired. The less said the better it would be about the romantic angle.
Vishal has given a genuine performance but he has got nothing new to handle. Kajal looks so fresh and cute but she too doesn’t get enough chance to emote. Filmmaker-actor Samuthirakkani and Vela Ramamurthi have done their respective parts well while Soori manages to tickle our funny bones at some places.
Velraj’s camera work is awesome and Imman’s music is competent. Among the songs, Silukku Maramey sure stands out.
