The San Andreas team is getting back together for the sci-fi action comedy Alpha Squad Seven, with Dwayne Johnson to star in and produce alongside Beau Flynn. They are taking the project to DreamWorks after a heated bidding war. Jeremiah Friedman and Nick Palmer are responsible for the pitch that sold the movie idea, and they will write the script.

At this time, no plot details have been released. The movie is described as a ‘four-quadrant action-comedy adventure set in space’. Called a cross between Independence Day, Guardians of the Galaxy and Armageddon, the hope is to launch a new franchise for The Rock to headline.

Jeremiah Friedman and Nick Palmer came up with the concept over dinner just two weeks ago, pitching it to Beau Flynn and his executive Wendy Jacobson as just a one-line idea. The four later approached and his production company 7 Bucks. From their, they fast-tracked the idea. Beau Flynn and first worked together on the sequel Journey 2: The Mysterious Island in 2012, and have continued working together, also bringing last summer’s misstep Hercules to the big screen. That, too, was meant to launch a franchise, buy there has been no talk of a follow-up.

Alpha Squad Seven began moving around town this past week, with several studios eager to land the project. It is stated that DreamWorks acted aggressively in securing the film. San Andreas opens at the end of this month. Central Intelligence is next on Dwayne Johnson’s schedule, with shooting on the New Line espionage comedy to begin this summer. The action icon stars opposite Kevin Hart. He is also appearing in the HBO series Ballers, which premieres in June. And he has G.I. Joe 3 on the horizon.

Alpha Squad Seven comes to theaters in 2017.
