The Huntsman: Winter’s War is an upcoming dark fantasy action-adventure film directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, a prequel/spin-off to the 2012 film Snow White and the Huntsman. The film is based on the characters from the German fairy tale “Snow White” compiled by the Brothers Grimm. The script is written by Frank Darabont, David Koepp, Craig Mazin and Evan Spiliotopoulos. The film is scheduled for an April 22, 2016, release.
The Huntsman: Winter’s War features Chris Hemsworth, Emily Blunt, Charlize Theron, Jessica Chastain and Nick Frost. Kristen Stewart will not be returning for the sequel to reprise her role as the character Snow White. Her character is reportedly not appearing in this installment.
Universal Pictures had originally planned to do a “Snow White and the Huntsman 2”, but had dropped Kristen Stewart from the sequel. It is speculated that it was due to her indiscretion with director Rupert Sanders. However, Universal’s statement in Aug 2012 emphatically denied she was being dropped from the film but they were exploring all options which later turned out to be the prequel ‘The Huntsman’.
Plot: Long before the evil Queen Ravenna was thought vanquished by Snow White’s blade, she watched silently as her sister, Freya, suffered a heartbreaking betrayal and fled their kingdom. With Freya’s ability to freeze any enemy, the young ice queen has spent decades in a remote wintry palace raising a legion of deadly huntsmen – including Eric and warrior Sara – only to find that her prized two defied her one demand: Forever harden your hearts to love.
When Freya learns of her sister’s demise, she summons her remaining soldiers to bring the Magic Mirror home to the only sorceress left who can harness its power. But once she discovers Ravenna can be resurrected from its golden depths, the wicked sisters threaten this enchanted land with twice the darkest force it’s ever seen. Now, their amassing army shall prove undefeatable…unless the banished huntsmen who broke their queen’s cardinal rule can fight their way back to one another.
