Vettah‘s success lies in its ability to hide everything without giving any hint whatsoever of what we can expect and this happens for the entire first half. We could sense something is cooking up for sure but nevertheless the screenplay do not give us an idea as to what is going to unfold and how the crime and mystery is being brought to light.
The story follow Commissioner of Police, Sreebala IPS and a case that she investigates. Sailex Abraham, Asst Commissioner and Melwin, a clerk at the District Court also directly or indirectly gets involved with this case. Too much detailing will be a spolier and hence stopping here on the storyline.
Was hearing a lot about mind games and some hunting related taglines in the last few days connected with Vettah. I was not expecting an edge of the seat thriller nor an action packed suspense film here. Rajesh Pillai himself came out openly and said that we shouldn’t expect something out-of-the-world. Trusting that statement my mind was open and ready for this slow mind game and was in no mood for a heavy-duty action and investigative drama.
Almost till the halfway mark, Vettah was able to make us think and did its best in hiding the suspense and mystery. There is suspense involved and there is lot of mystery surrounding the plot as well as the three main characters and others who support them around which the story unfolded.
The revelations that form part of story happened little earlier than expected. The mystery and suspense revelation happening at an early stage of the second half did some damage to the overall end result. Still Vettah is a slow paced film that deserves a watch.
Screenplay can create lot of confusion and it is bound to happen when too many subplots are involved. Unless the execution part can cover up such things and narrate the story without any loose ends, film will always be running on a sticky platform.
Vettah fortunately was in the safe hands of Rajesh Pillai who made it sure the movie’s prime focus isn’t lost by the wayside. This was aided by some powerful one liners on the dialogue side that played a crucial part in the movement of the plot.
On the acting part, it was a welcome change seeing Manju Warrier donning the police uniform perhaps the first time in her career. Please correct me if I am wrong. Though at times she looked stiff with her facial expressions, I would say it was a better and bold effort from the actress. Indrajith is more or less under utilised as the assistant to Sreebala. Still it was a positive effort from him.
Kunchaco Boban is the actor who had to do bulk of the acting and it was a sincere attempt from him portraying the mystery character of Melwin to perfection. There were different phases and the character passes through desperate situations and he was successful with his acting. At times he had to convey something through mere looks or smile and he was upto the task.
Vijayaraghavan, Kaadhal Sandhya, Ronny David Raj,Prem Prakash Deepak Parambol, Kottayam Nazeer and Santhosh Keezhattoor are also part of the supporting cast with big and smaller roles.
Technical side played its part for Vettah to land without much trouble. Cinematography and editing was done well. Mystery thrillers demands a certain tone and tune for creating the perfect mood on the BGM side and Shaan Rahman has done justice with the faith reposed by the makers in giving the job to him.
Vettah is a psycho-thriller with crime, mystery and some suspense. There is the presence of mind game played by the reel life characters on the one side and on the other side, we have a guessing game for the audience by getting into the thick and thin of the story.
An above average crime film with a different treatment, Vettah is good for a view provided you don’t get an idea about the story, what is in store and the mysteries hidden in the film. Anyone with an inclination towards slow paced crime thrillers will find Vettah a decent one to watch.
