What’s hot

The world-building of The Tomorrow War is spot on – a must for any larger-than-life sci-fi movie – with wonderful VFX, production design, camerawork, showing no difference between an OTT and theatrical release…honestly, this movie was meant for the big screen, but alas… The plot is also well thought out and executed with a decent amount of insight put into it. Yvonne Strahovski, J.K. Simmons, Betty Gilpin, Sam Richardson and Edwin Hodge are all first rate among the cast, but no prizes for guessing that it’s a Chris Pratt show all the way and boy does our ‘Star Lord’ deliver, ably swapping his Guardians of the Galaxy gear for the simple garb of an average, American, family guy, and then the soldier’s suit to combat aliens in the future. The buildup is good, the character designs of the aliens stick with you and when the action explodes, it’s pure, adrenaline-pumping stuff. What’s not

The Tomorrow War overstays its welcome at almost 2 hours and 15 minutes, and though the climax gives us another thrilling action set piece, you can’t help but wonder by that time when will the movie get over? The emotional scenes, especially between Chris Pratt and Yvonne Strahovski (not so much the ones between Pratt and JK Simmons on account of the humour they lace it with) act as a deviating killjoy to the monster mayhem unfolding around them, and both these sequence and the overall duration could’ve been edited better by the duo of Roger Barto and Garret Elkins. Chris McKay is adept at handling the big, bombastic scene, but falters in keeping the entire narrative as also the human element tightly wound. And in spite of all the entertainment, this one isn’t just isn’t as smart or original as other brilliant alien-attack movies like Edge of Tomorrow, Oblivion, War of the Worlds, Independence Day, or the best of all, 1979’s Alien and its 1986 sequel, Aliens.

BL Verdict

Despite its derivative nature and slightly overstaying its welcome at 2 hours and 15 minutes, Amazon Prime’s The Tomorrow War zips by on the sheer conviction of its larger-than-life set pieces, fantastic creature design, wonderful CGI VFX, adrenaline-pumping action sequences, and a wholly committed cast, especially a completely endearing Chris Pratt. If you don’t go looking for the next Edge of Tomorrow, Oblivion, War of the Worlds or Independence Day, there’s plenty of fun to be had here. I’m going with 3 out of 5 stars.
