What’s it about
Agastya (Sidharth Shukla) is a hot-headed, radical and ‘arty’ theatre director who hates the superficiality of mainstream entertainment as well as the Page 3 folks. He bumps into Rumi Desai (Sonia Rathee) at an art exhibit and fireworks happen. Rumi who is madly in love with Ishaan Rana (Ehan Bhatt) ends up finding a f**k buddy in Agastya as she tries to win over Ishaan. But will Agastya and Rumi’s passion play end up in something deeper? We have to watch the entire series for that…
What’s hot…
The first four episodes are all about establishing the character of Rumi. Sonia Rathee makes a confident debut. Her character is not a very likeable one, but she makes it work. And she looks gorgeous! Sidharth Shukla is effortless as Agastya Rao and has no inhibitions whether it is locking lips on screen or mouthing the expletives. It is evident that the role of the hot-headed but passionate Agastya was made for him. The fights between Agastya and Rumi are fun to watch. There is a particular sequence where a bitchy Rumi steals the show. Both the characters are morally ambivalent, and that adds a bit of layering. Talking about the narration or dialogues, the show is peppered with colourful language. You will hear some of the choicest words. Director Priyanka Ghose and the writers have invested all their energies on the main two characters so far. But the success of any love story lies in the chemistry and these two have the spark. The editing is crisp and you’ll breeze through the episodes.
What’s not
The makers seem to be keen on unveiling Agastya’s character slowly. We do not get his back story in detail. The only thing that might work against Sidharth Shukla is that people will instantly associate Agastya Rao with his fiery persona in Bigg Boss 13. The projection of South Mumbai’s elite might come across as stereotyped for some. The first four episodes lack a bit of the raw emotion that is the highlight of a good love story, but then we have to watch it further.
BL Verdict
With its contemporary outlook and 90’s premise of a tashan-wala love story, the show should appeal to a large crowd. Sidharth Shukla and Sonia Rathee’s web show promise a rollercoaster tale of emotions that is breezy, cheesy and loaded with sass. Warning note: Please watch it with your earphones on!
